6. St Bartholomew's Church

Bartholomew Bretherton was a successful coach proprietor, who built a mansion (now known as Loyola Hall) for himself and his family in Rainhill in about 1824. He paid for the building of St Bartholomew's Roman Catholic Church which was completed in 1840, and also provided St Bartholomew's School which opened soon afterwards. The church is built of sandstone in the neo-classical style.
